Context: When we reviewed the Prestige, the battery life jumped off the page when it came in from our lab testers, and our reviewer was similarly blown away after his real-world usage. Lasting for 13 hours and 22 minutes in our Laptop Mag battery test, it crushed our typical expectation of 10 hours. The 16-inch 4K OLED panel on the Prestige 16 AI Evo is not something you typically expect on a business laptop with incredible color and brightness. Business laptops typically register around 80% or below for the DCI-P3 color gamut testing, so the 139.2% achieved by the Prestige 16 is like opening a dreary office curtain to a bright sunny day. 

While the Prestige is capable of handling some creative work, rest assured that it is ready to be your spreadsheet-slaying workstation, too. The full keyboard with a number pad makes data entry a breeze, and our reviewer was thrilled with the comfortable and speedy chiclet-style keys. 

Business users will appreciate the multiple secure login options with a fingerprint reader and Windows Hello login support from using the webcam. Frequent travelers are the only business users that may balk at the Prestige 16 AI Evo due to its larger 16-inch display and just over 3-pound weight, but if you aren't traveling that often or just don't mind toting a slightly larger laptop around then the Prestige 16 AI Evo should be an easy choice.

This sub-$500 has a lot going for it, including nearly 13 hours of battery life. Plus, according to our reviewer, it's the most attractive Chromebook they've ever reviewed. That's high praise considering less premium laptops tend to look like unassuming gray or black slabs. 

But let's leave the Spin 714's dark-gray finish with the gold accents for a minute and take a look beneath the chassis. With its Intel Core i5-1335U CPU, don't expect the system to do any heavy data crunching or run AutoCAD, but it can do productivity tasks, web work, or stream as much video as you like. On the Geekbench 6 test, it defeated the [HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook](https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/hp-dragonfly-pro-chromebook-review-the-pixelbook-successor) which costs $300 more — 6,335 vs. 4,263\. 

The tables were turned on the JetStream 2.0 benchmark, which tests how quickly large web pages load. The Chromebook Spin 714 achieved a score of 250.2, which beats the Chromebook average (240), but not the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook (256.7).

The LG Gram SuperSlim puts every other so-called ultrabook on notice with its 15.6-inch display, 0.49-inch thickness, and unbelievable 2.18-pound weight. When you pick this thing up, it is mind-bending that there is a real functioning laptop inside. 

Even more amazingly, it isn't a weak laptop that can't do more than browse the web and generate documents. The Intel Core i7-1360p processor, 32GB of RAM, 512GB of RAM, and an Intel Iris Xe GPU give you enough oomph to outperform the competition. Let's not forget that it also features a 15.6-inch OLED display while being lighter than many 13-14-inch ultrabooks.

The Gram SuperSlim proved its mettle in our benchmarks, delivering a Geekbench 5 score that cleared the mainstream premium laptop average and even the M2 MacBook Air! The SSD is no slouch either, providing a file transfer rate of 1,692.4MBps, well above the premium average of 1,362.7MBps.

Thin, light, and powerful? You're probably expecting to hear that it has terrible battery life. Think again! Apparently, LG also shoved a large battery in the pocket dimension inside the Gram SuperSlim, which lasted 11 hours and 38 minutes on our battery test.

So what's the downside? There's one magic trick that LG can't manage: creating extra depth for the keyboard, which our reviewer found a little shallow for their liking. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's worth considering if you are churning out thousands of words a day on the Gram SuperSlim.

That shallow keyboard is a small price to pay for the rest of what you get, though. That is why the LG Gram SuperSlim earned 4.5 stars and an Editor's Choice award. If you need an ultraportable ultrabook, look no further.

[Acer](https://www.laptopmag.com/uk/tag/acer)'s Swift Go 14 is the easy choice for the best budget laptop. Starting at $749, the Go 14 isn't the cheapest laptop, but its value is incredible. We reviewed the slightly upgraded $999 configuration, but the main trade-off is moving from an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H to a Core Ultra 5 125H. The performance difference will be negligible if you stick to productivity work, browsing, and other general computing. 

The design remains the same at either price, with the Go 14 coming in at just 2.9 pounds. The metallic all-aluminum chassis gives off a faint sparkle that looks and feels far more premium than its price. Popping it open, the contrasting black chiclet-style backlit keyboard looks and feels excellent. Acer also gives you ports aplenty on this portable laptop with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a Kensington lock slot.

The display lands just below the mainstream average for color at 79.1 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut (85.2 percent is average), but it beats the category average in brightness at 374 nits (354 is average). Again, factoring in the price, these are strong results. You could also opt for the 2.8K display configuration if you value a sharper image.

Performance with our review model was everything we've come to expect from the latest Intel Core Ultra. Our Geekbench 6.2 overall performance test scored 12,434, overtaking more expensive options like the MacBook Air M3 (12,087). It also scorched the competition for our Handbrake video encoding test at 5 minutes and 18 seconds, almost four full minutes under the category average (9:07), again besting the MacBook Air M3 (7:54).

Context: With that kind of performance, the expectation is that the battery life will come crashing down. Not so for the MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max. It's one of the longest-lasting laptops we've ever tested, managing to hold on for 18 hours and 5 minutes in our _Laptop Mag_battery test. The average premium laptop taps out at 11 hours and 17 minutes, while the aforementioned Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16 Gen 9 could only make it 9 hours and 51 minutes.

So what are the downsides of the MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max? Price and macOS are the biggest hurdles. The M3 Max configurations start at $3,499; it's expensive but not really out of line when you consider the performance and battery life is something you just won't find anywhere else. macOS is a great operating system, but if you have Windows-only apps that you need to use or you're business doesn't support macOS it could be a problem. Finally, while gaming support is better than it's been in the past, it's still nowhere near as good as on Windows. If none of these are dealbreakers for you, the MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max is the clear-cut performance champ.

Asus has been on a roll with the Zenbook 14 OLED line for a few years, so while it is no longer a surprise, this early 2024 Zenbook takes yet another significant leap forward.

This is in no small part due to the new Intel Core Ultra chipset inside, which puts the Zenbook 14 OLED on par with any productivity and light content creation laptops on the market. It also absolutely blew the roof off our battery life test, with 15 hours and 52 minutes in our test. That's the longest a traditional Windows laptop has lasted in recent memory.

Divining into some of the specifics on performance, it overtook the 13-inch MacBook Air M3 in multi-core Geekbench 6.2 (12,707 vs. 12,087). That wasn't its only win against the much-vaunted MacBook. The Zenbook also beat it in our Handbrake 1.6 test by converting a 4K video to 1080p in 6:36, over a minute faster than the Air M3's 7:54\. 

The OLED display looks excellent in person, but the benchmarking put it in the middle of the road when it comes to the DCI-P3 color gamut at 79.8 percent, that's below the mainstream average of 85.2 percent and just slightly ahead of the MacBook Air M3 (77.8 percent). It is extremely color accurate with a Delta-E of 0.21, relevant for content creators. Display brightness is a weak point against its competition at 339 nits, which is not a terrible result, but it's something we want to see Asus address for the next model.

The Dell XPS 13 9345 is one of the first generation of Copilot+ PCs powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chipset. This gives you access to a variety of AI-fueled Windows features that promise to enhance work and play on your laptop. Even if you aren't sold on the AI revolution just yet, this laptop serves up a potent combination of features.

The battery life is the undeniable star of this show, coming in at 19 hours and 1 minute and an even more astounding 20 hours and 51 minutes after we installed the BIOS 1.7.0 update. The average premium laptop makes it to 11 hours and 13 minutes in this test. If you are a student or a frequent traveler who needs to stay powered up on the go, the Dell XPS 13 9345 is unmatched. The MacBook Air line is the only thing in its price range that comes close to it with 15 hours and 13 minutes.

Lest you think that battery life comes from a power-sipping processor, the Snapdragon X Elite also delivers an incredible 14,635 multi-core score in the Geekbench 6.3 overall performance test. That obliterates the premium laptop average of 8,927 and its nearest competitors like the MacBook Air M3 (12,087) or Zenbook 14 (12,707).

It's not the perfect laptop, though. Two ports will leave some users running for a [docking station](https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/best-docking-stations) or USB-C hub. At just 66.9% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, the display is rather dull, and our reviewer found the keyboard to be cramped.

Context: **Screen Size: 12 to 14 inches for Portability**

Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to carry it regularly, go for one with a 12, 13, or 14-inch display. If it won't leave your desk too often, a 15- or 16-inch model gives you more screen real estate while remaining portable. Some gaming rigs, media machines, and workstations even have 17- or 18-inch screens, but consider how often you'll want to tote around these often 7+ pound laptops.

**2-in-1 or Clamshell?**

More and more of today's laptops are [2-in-1s](https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/best-2-in-1-laptops) with screens that either bend back 360 degrees or detach so you can use them as tablets. If you like the idea of using your laptop in slate mode for drawing, media consumption, or just standing up, a 2-in-1 could be for you. However, like an Ultrabook or any thin-and-light laptop, you can often get better features or a lower price by going with a traditional clamshell-style laptop, so consider your priorities.

**Battery Life: 9+ Hours for Portability**

Battery life matters unless you only plan to use your laptop on your desk. Even within the home or office, having plenty of juice enables you to work or play more freely, whether going to the couch or the conference table. We recommend getting a laptop that lasts at least 9 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. If you are a frequent traveler or a student regularly working away from an outlet, look for over 10 hours; there are plenty of options. We use a giant spreadsheet macro that matches 65,000 names with their addresses to judge pure processing power, the Handbrake video transcoder converts a 4K video to 1080p, and the Geekbench 6 synthetic test. To make our best laptops of 2024 list, the system needs to score at least 4 out of 5 stars on our reviews and deliver on the things shoppers care about most. Our evaluations focus on design and comfort, display quality, the keyboard and touchpad, performance, battery life, and value.

Our expert reviewers also test each product to see how it looks, feels, and performs in everyday situations. Because we see so many different notebooks, we can compare each to its direct competitors and give you an idea of how it compares to the average laptop in its price band.

When we bring a laptop into our laboratory, we aim to see how it would work if you brought it into your home or office. While we use industry-standard benchmarks such as Geekbench and 3DMark, we focus heavily on real-world tests that we have developed in-house.

Context: * **Screen Resolution:** Don't settle for anything less than a 1920 x 1080 (aka 1080p or full HD) resolution. If you're a content creator, you'll want to look into at least a 2K resolution panel or even a [4k laptop](https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/best-4k-laptops). Gamers should pay attention to the refresh and response rate. We recommend 144Hz and 3-millisecond, respectively.
* **CPU:** An Intel Core i5 or Core Ultra 5 provides good mainstream performance. Some budget systems will come with Core i3, which is good enough for basic tasks, but avoid it for a . Get a Core i7 or a quad-core processor (serial number ends in HQ or HK) for gaming or high-end productivity tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling. AMD is enjoying a renaissance with its Ryzen line of processors. Ryzen 7 is the middle-of-the-road chip that will bring mainstream performance, while Ryzen 5 and 9 cover your entry-level and power user needs. And, of course, we can't forget Apple, with its M-series chips based on ARM architecture, which has taken the industry by storm.
* **RAM**: 8GB is enough for most users, but if it's within your budget, spring for 16GB as it will ensure better performance over your laptop's life. Professional power users, content creators, and gamers will look for 32GB and beyond, but that is overkill for most people. While we would not recommend 4GB systems in general, if it is a secondary laptop that will see use predominantly for light web browsing and steaming, it will suffice.
* **Storage:** 256 GB of internal storage is probably enough unless you're a gamer, content creator, or power user. On budget laptops, look out for eMMC memory; while still flash memory, it is much slower than an SSD.
* **Graphics Chip:** Gamers and creative professionals should get one of the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series or AMD Radeon 7000 series GPUs. Everyone else will be happy with the CPU's built-in integrated graphics, which have improved considerably in recent years.

Context: The laptop weighs 3.2 pounds, pretty light for a 14-inch 2-in-1, but thanks to that power-sipping CPU from Intel, it still crushed our battery life test with over 11 hours on a single charge! That's one of the best results we've ever seen from a 2-in-1\. Despite its frugal battery usage, the Intel Core Ultra and Arc GPU blew our reviewer away, putting up better Geekbench and 3D Mark results than many heavier clamshell laptops.

So why isn't it perfect? While the display is bright and colorful, we've seen better benchmarks from competitors. However, the rest of the package makes it impossible to argue with the HP Spectre x360 14 as the best 2-in-1 around, which is why the notebook earned 4.5 stars and our coveted Editor’s Choice award.

Context: Looking at the benchmarks, the MacBook Air M3 scored 12,087 on Geekbench 6.2, well above the category average. Our Handbrake video transcoding test took 7 minutes and 54 seconds to transcode a [4K](https://www.laptopmag.com/uk/tag/4k-resolution) video to 1080p. Again, this [beats](https://www.laptopmag.com/uk/tag/beats-by-dre) the average, but it's worth noting that some of its [Intel Core](https://www.laptopmag.com/uk/tag/intel-core) Ultra-powered competition is passing the MacBook here. Apple also addressed the slightly slower SSD read/write performance of the Air M2, jumping from 2,800.1/2,210.6MBps on the M2 to 3,030.7/3,058.8MBps with the M3\. 

All that performance prowess doesn't hurt its battery life, either. If finding an outlet can be a challenge during your day, never fear. The Air M3 powered through over 15 hours of battery life testing in our lab.

If that’s not enough, you also get a 1080p webcam with Apple's latest software tricks helping to boost the hardware to higher heights. So what are the downsides? If you have a lot of peripherals, the pair of Thunderbolt/USB-C ports may be challenging, but at least you have MagSafe 3 to keep both ports free while charging. Starting at $1,099, the 13-inch MacBook Air M3 isn't cheap but remains a solid value. You may want to pay the extra $200 for 16GB of RAM, though multitaskers will appreciate the extra performance headroom.

Armed with up to a 16-core M3 Max CPU and 40-core GPU, this is the pinnacle of MacBook performance and crushes even Windows workstations. Our review configuration of the MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max featured 48GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, but you can max those out at up to 128GB of RAM and an 8TB SSD. In the Geekbench 6 test, the MacBook Pro 16 M3 max hit 20,863; to put that in perspective, the premium laptop average is only 9,078\. We haven't seen another laptop break 16,000.

Context: But the destruction you’ll unleash comes from the 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900HX and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU with 16GB of VRAM. Both chips are the latest and greatest and very overclockable so you can squeeze every inch of power out of them. And while we’re here, I can’t overlook the pair of 1TB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. This treacherous triad destroyed just about every benchmark we threw at it on both the overall and gaming performance. 

Where the Strix Scar 18 hit a bit of a hiccup is the File transfer test and battery life. But about 4.5 hours is still pretty good for a laptop packing this much power. Outside of this, my only complaint about this system is the 720p webcam, sure I can use an external webcam $4,000, I expect 1080p –– hell 4K. But overall, this is the gaming laptop to beat.

While this isn't awful, there are cheap laptops out there, especially Chromebooks, which offer much longer battery life. So, you'll likely want to bring its charging cable with you when you're out and about.

Context: Our independent benchmark tests showed a hefty leap in performance between the M3 Max and M1 Max MacBook Pro 16-inches. We saw a good 35% increase in single core and a considerable 69% increase in multi-core CPU performance in Geekbench 6\. You should, therefore, see a noticeable time reduction when completing workloads, specifically graphics-intensive ones. The MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max's performance makes workloads fast, fluid and incredibly seamless, especially for creatives. At the moment, the M3 Pro and M3 Max remain Apple’s most powerful chips, but if you’re concerned that they might be outdated soon I don’t blame you. They came out less than a year after the M2 Pro and M2 Max, and Apple has recently released the M4 chip in the [iPad Pro](https://www.techradar.com/tablets/ipad-pro/ipad-pro-13-inch-2024). While the M4 doesn’t reach the performance levels of the M3 Pro or M3 Max, it does suggest we may see an M4 Pro and M4 Max, along with updated MacBook Pros, sooner rather than later. However, even if these do arrive soon, I believe that it won’t mean the current MacBook Pros will suddenly feel underpowered.

Apple promises up to 22 hours of video playback, and 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge for the MacBook Pro 16-inch, with what it says is the "longest battery life ever in a Mac". The good news is that those claims are pretty spot on, as I found that in our battery life benchmark test, where I ran a looped 1080p video until the MacBook Pro turned off, the battery lasted over 24 hours. Considering the power on offer here, that's extremely impressive.

The Dell XPS 17 (9730) remains the best large-screen laptop you can buy. If the design looks familiar to you, then that's because the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro features a look that's heavily influenced by the MacBook Air. This isn't particularly bad, especially for people who love the look of Apple's laptops, but want to stick with Windows 11, but it also means it's hard to get too excited about the look of this laptop. One thing we do love, however, is the gorgeous AMOLED screen that really makes images look bright and vibrant. It's also a touchscreen - something you won't get on a MacBook.

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro offers excellent performance curtesy of the new Intel Core Ultra 7, which is Intel's latest mobile CPU and means this laptop can power through pretty much any task you throw at it - though don't go expecting it to play games on its integrated graphics. The screen is the real star of the show, however, and makes working on this laptop a joy. However, while the screen is also great for watching movies and TV shows on, unfortunately the built-in speakers aren’t as good, leading to tinny sound quality. If you want audio to go with the spectacular visuals, you’ll want to connect some external speakers.

Meanwhile, the magnetized backplate on the Duet 5 Chromebook has a small clip to house a Lenovo Active Pen stylus, even though the stylus isn't included in the box. The best thing about the design, however, is the gorgeous 1080p OLED display, which offers exceptional image quality - especially considering the price.

When it comes to general web browsing, video streaming, and basic productivity use, the Duet 5 does exactly what you want it to do without so much as a hiccup. Its CPU is upgraded to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen2 processor, which is a step up from the last model, and the 8GB of RAM is a decent amount for a Chromebook, keeping things running very smoothly.

While Chromebooks on average get about 10 hours of life on a fully-charged battery, the Lenovo Duet 5 lasted a huge 16 hours. This is a drop from the previous model (which managed over 20 hours), which is disappointing.

When it comes to gaming, the best laptop brands include Alienware, Asus and Acer.

**How much RAM does a laptop need?** RAM (Random Access Memory) is an important specification to look for in a laptop. You’ll want 4GB at the very least for a Windows laptop – though we’d actually recommend for many people to go for 8GB. That will ensure that the laptop runs well for years to come. Budget Chromebooks can get away with less RAM, such as 1GB or 2GB.

**Battery life considerations** Finally there’s battery life. This is likely to be one of the most important considerations you have when choosing what laptop to buy. The best laptops need to be able to let you work - and play - for hours on end without you having to scramble for a power adapter. Modern laptops are getting ever more power-efficient, which has led to longer battery lives. For a laptop to be included in our best laptops list, it needs to offer a battery life of five hours or more.

Context: Thanks to the ARM-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip, the Surface Laptop is an incredible productivity performer, and in our review we found that Windows 11 felt fast and responsive, and all the apps we loaded up worked without issue. This is great to see, as previous ARM-based Windows laptops could not run apps that were designed for Intel or AMD chips. Thankfully, that's no longer the case. While you can't play demanding games on this thing, for day-to-day use, it's an incredible laptop.

Battery life

Thanks to the power efficiencies of the ARM chip inside the Surface Laptop, the battery life of this device is excellent, offering 15 hours of life on a single charge during our time with the device. In real-world use, I found I only needed to charge the 15-inch model once, then happily used it as my main work laptop for three work days before needing to charge it again - which is seriously impressive. The 15-inch model has a larger battery, but due to the larger screen, battery life should be similar between 13-inch and 15-inch models.

Value for money

★★★★☆

The smaller model of the Surface Laptop starts at $999.99 / £1,049.99 / AU$1,899, while the larger model starts at $1,299.99 / £1,349 / AU$2,399\. While these certainly aren't budget prices, they still offer excellent value for money compared to similarly-powerful laptops - and it means the Surface Laptop is also cheaper than the MacBook Air (M3) as well.

The latest MacBook Air sticks to the same design as the previous M2 model - but that's fine with us. It has a stylish and modern look that's easy to carry around and comfortable to work on. The new MacBook Air comes with the latest M3 chip - and there are actually two versions you can buy: a base model with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, and a more powerful version with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. The base model also comes with 8GB of memory, which is quite low by today's standards. If you have the budget we recommend configuring the MacBook Air (M3) to come with more memory, up to a maximum of 24GB. While reviewing the MacBook Air (M3), we found it to perform brilliantly, with macOS booting fast and running smoothly, even with multiple apps open at once.

Context: This is probably the most important consideration when it comes to picking the best laptops to recommend to you. No matter if it’s a powerful gaming laptop that costs thousands of dollars, or a humble budget Chromebook, each device needs to justify its price tag by excelling in the tasks it’s designed for.

## Battery life

This is another hugely important consideration for many people when looking to buy a new laptop. One of the best things about laptops is how portable they are – but if you need to always look out for a power outlet to keep using your device, then you’re going to get very annoyed very quickly.

Of course, battery life expectations will vary depending on the type of laptop. For Chromebooks and modern MacBooks, a time of around 10 to 20 hours between charges should be expected.

Windows laptops based on AMD or Intel hardware should expect around 10 hours on a single charge, but the latest range of Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered Windows laptops, also known as ‘Copilot+ PC’ devices, should offer battery lives similar to Chromebooks and MacBooks.

Gaming laptops, however, will typically offer around four to eight hours of battery life. This is because they value performance over efficiency, and their high-powered components can quickly deplete any battery when playing games. These gaming laptops, along with powerful workstation laptops often known as ‘desktop replacements’ are usually designed to be used while plugged in. However, you should expect at least a few hours of battery life for when you’re using the laptop for less strenuous tasks such as emailing and editing documents.

Last year's Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra did a lot of things right, but its battery life was very disappointing. Thankfully, the new Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro is a massive improvement, offering over 10 hours of life on a single charge.

As a Samsung Galaxy product, you should expect a premium price tag, and while the $1,449 / £1,599 puts it above the base MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) model, it offers better specs, a larger SSD and a better display as well thanks to AMOLED technology. It's not cheap, but you get a lot for your money.

The MSI Katana 15 isn't an ugly gaming laptop, but the design does feel a bit old fashioned. This is a bulky, heavy gaming laptop, rather than a thin and light model, but that's the price you pay for a more affordable gaming laptop - you're not going to get premium designs and build quality here, though the Katana 15 doesn't feel like it would easily break. The 15.6-inch 1080p screen does the job well, and with a high 144Hz refresh rate, competitive games in particular feel fast and responsive.

As long as you keep your expectations in check, the Acer Aspire 5 remains the [best cheap laptop](https://www.techradar.com/best/the-best-cheap-laptop) you can buy in 2024\. Its design is lightweight yet doesn't feel cheap, its large screen size is comfortable to work on, and you can even configure it to come with an Nvidia GPU. Context: When I say ‘future-proof’ what I mean is that if you buy a laptop, you won’t need to upgrade or buy a new one for a long time. A laptop with old hardware might be cheaper, but if you feel the need to buy a new laptop after only a year or so, it’ll cost you more in the long run.

Depending on the type of laptop you’re looking for, the hardware specifications will vary. For standard Windows 11 laptops, I recommend 8GB RAM as a minimum, but ideally 16GB, 512GB of storage and a current generation Intel or AMD processor.

If you want to make use of on-device AI tools, like image generation, then you’ll want to look at the new range of ‘Copilot+ PCs’. These laptops meet certain criteria set by Microsoft so they can make use of AI features in Windows 11, such as having 16GB of RAM and a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit) that’s capable of 40 trillion processes a second (TOPS).

If that’s a lot of jargon, don’t worry as these laptops will be clearly labelled with Copilot+ PC branding, which means they come with the right hardware.

When looking for a MacBook, you’ll want to make sure it has a new M-series chip, with the M3 currently being the most recent. Entry level MacBooks come with 8GB memory and 256GB SSD, and while this is OK, I recommend going for 16GB and 512GB if you can afford it, as that will ensure it keeps running well for years to come.

As ChromeOS, which Chromebooks use as an operating system, isn’t as demanding a bit of software as Windows 11 and macOS, it means Chromebooks don’t need as high specifications – and that’s why they are often quite a bit cheaper than laptops and MacBooks.

So, an older processor, 4GB of RAM and even just 64GB of storage (due to Chromebooks using a lot of cloud-based services) should get you decent performance on a budget Chromebook. However, investing in a Chromebook with 8GB of RAM, a larger SSD and new processor will give you a much better experience.

Context: ❌ **Portability is a must:** Unsurprisingly, this 17-inch laptop isn't the easiest to carry around compared to 13-inch Ultrabooks. That said, for the size, it is impressively svelte.

The Dell XPS 17 looks and feels extremely premium thanks to its machined aluminum body. Thin bezels surround the display, giving it a modern look while also keeping the overall size of the laptop as compact as possible. This isn't a laptop you can comfortably carry around in a small bag, mind you, but Dell has done a great job of making sure it's not big or bulky.

Performance

★★★★☆

This is an excellent performer, packed with high-end components from Intel and Nvidia. Day to day tasks feel fast and responsive, and heavy creative workloads, such as 3D rendering and 4K video editing, are handled well. If you want a powerful workstation laptop with a large screen for creative work, and you don't fancy the MacBook Pro 16-inch ([which is also in this guide](https://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/laptops/best-laptops-1304361#section-the-best-productivity-laptop)), then this is an excellent alternative.

Battery life

★★★★☆

Powerful laptops with large screens often suffer from poor battery life, but thanks to the efficient hardware in the Dell XPS 17, it avoids that fate. During our review, we found that for watching videos and web browsing, it'll last just under 10 hours on a single charge, meaning you can use it unplugged for a whole workday - though heavier workloads will see the battery deplete faster.

Weighing 1.7kg and measuring 18mm thick, it's a laptop you can easily carry around with you. We didn't love the L-shaped power connector in our review, however, which sticks out a bit when plugged in.

The Acer Aspire 5 doesn't wow when it comes to performance - but nor does it disappoint. This is a solid and dependable laptop that you can rely on for your day-to-day needs. However, gaming is out of the question with the base model, which comes with integrated graphics. You don’t want to be stuck with a laptop that starts lagging after a few years. For Windows laptops, look to get one with a modern 14th generation (or 13th) Intel processor, or AMD Ryzen 7000 series. With a MacBook, go for an M1, M2 or new M3 model – which are Apple’s powerful chips made specially for its laptops.

You should also go for a minimum of 8GB of RAM, though 16GB is more future-proof. Recently, Microsoft suggested that 16GB of RAM would be the minimum requirement for the next generation of 'AI laptops'. For Chromebooks, however, 4GB of RAM is fine.

Context: Apple claims the MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) can last up to 18 hours watching Apple TV shows and 15 hours browsing the internet, though in our battery life benchmark tests (which involve playing a looped 1080p video) the 13-inch MacBook Air lasted a bit less than that, at 14 hours and 19 minutes. That's an excellent time for a laptop of this power, however it is slightly less than the previous model lasted in the same tests, which could suggest the bump in performance has come at the cost of efficiency.

So, if you want real value for money when buying a MacBook, the M2 model is now the one to go for.

Context: As far as Chromebooks go, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is an excellent performer, with the Chrome OS operating system booting quickly, while apps run impressively smoothly. It feels fast and responsive - something you wouldn't be able to say about many Windows 11 laptops at this price. For day-to-day tasks, including document creation, emails and video calls, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 performs very well - though you are limited to apps built for Chrome OS or Android. This is an important consideration when buying the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 - or any Chromebook for that matter - as a lot of applications for Windows or macOS won’t run. The good news is that there are a growing number of Chrome OS versions, and some decent alternatives, and being able to run Android apps gives you even more choice. However, there is also a chance that a piece of software you rely on every day on a traditional laptop may not have a version for Chromebooks, so make sure you do a bit of research before you buy.

Context: While you definitely shouldn't expect to play the latest games at their very highest settings, the MSI Katana 15 does a very good job. The 1080p screen means that the RTX 4050 GPU, Nvidia's lower-mid-range graphics card, isn't put under too much stress, and slightly older games, such as Far Cry 6, can hit over 80fps (frames per second) at Ultra settings. Considering that game remains an impressive graphical showcase proves that the MSI Katana 15 can certainly punch above its weight. Considering the relatively affordable price tag, you'll be very impressed with the performance on offer here.

Gaming laptops often struggle to offer decent battery life, and unfortunately the MSI Katana 15 is one of the worst offenders. In our web surfing test, which is hardly intensive, it lasted two hours and 40 minutes, and the PCMark battery test, which replicated light to medium-intensity work, didn't even hit an hour. So, this is a laptop that will need to be plugged in a lot of the time.

The MSI Katana 15 is excellent value for money, which is why it's our pick for the best affordable gaming laptop you can buy right now. It's not the cheapest, but we recommend you saving up a bit more to get this laptop thanks to its new components - cheaper gaming laptops often stick with older tech to keep down costs.
